Black Girls in Indie Initiative

A FloraeLume Initiative

Black Girls in Indie is a creative community dedicated to celebrating, connecting, and supporting Black women building independent creative careers, businesses, and artistic practices.

We recognize that "indie" exists across many disciplines. Our community includes writers, authors, filmmakers, performers, musicians, visual artists, designers, culinary artists, photographers, digital creators, creative entrepreneurs, cultural producers, and multidisciplinary creatives whose work exists beyond traditional boundaries.

Our mission is to create a space where Black women are not only seen and celebrated, but are connected to resources, relationships, and opportunities that support long-term creative growth and sustainability.

How We Support Our Community

Black Girls in Indie supports members through intentional opportunities for visibility, education, connection, collaboration, and creative development.

Visibility & Storytelling

We highlight the work and journeys of our members through features, interviews, creative showcases, editorial opportunities, and storytelling through FloraeLume and affiliated platforms.

Community & Connection

We foster relationships among Black women across creative disciplines through gatherings, conversations, networking opportunities, and intentional spaces for connection.

Collaboration & Creative Partnerships

Creativity thrives in community. We encourage members to connect with one another, exchange ideas, and develop meaningful collaborations across disciplines.

We provide education, resources, and conversations around building successful creative partnerships, including considerations related to collaboration structures, ownership, licensing, attribution, expectations, communication, and practices that help creatives work together intentionally and sustainably.

Our goal is to help members not only find collaborators, but build relationships and projects rooted in clarity, respect, and a shared creative vision.

Education & Professional Development

We provide resources, workshops, discussions, and learning opportunities focused on navigating independent creative careers, entrepreneurship, creative sustainability, and professional growth.

Opportunity & Resource Sharing

We actively seek to connect members with relevant grants, residencies, commissions, creative calls, funding opportunities, collaborations, professional connections, and other opportunities aligned with their work and goals.
